I don`t know how things are in Ireland, but in Romania they are quite the opposite: they ABSOLUTELY REFUSE to learn anything in school(are the teachers` nightmare) or to go to school( there are free special places in university, that remain unoccupied, for those among them that actually graduate the highschool, while there are not enough free places for all the romanians that want to go to university), they refuse to get themselves an honest job, prefer illegal business/stealing/selling stolen goods, are totally uneducated, promiscuous (nobody forces young 12 – 14 years old girls to have premarital, ludicrously free sex, they just have it for fun or because of lack of education), are extremely agressive against anyone that tries to stand up against their abuses; spend in one day more money (illegaly obtained money) than an average hard working romanian wins per week (to say the least) and then they go the social services to get free food which they resell to their “friends” or to get help at paying the heating bill for some disgustingly tacky “palaces”, …..or go to the Europe`s cities to beg and steal, … And then they no longer accept being called gipsies- the way they have been called since they first set foot in Europe- they find that offending and they demand in the name of human rights to be called “romani” or “romanes”; after centuries in which they have been called gitano/zingaro/tigan/… by the entire Europe, now they remembered that their people`s name conveniently is “romani/romanes”. And who remembered and demanded that? The “travellers” in Romania! And no romanian (as in person of romanian origin) politician dares to speak up and say the truth in front of the entire world. Heaven forbid they should be offended by telling the truth about them – that more than 75 % of them are uneducated, unemployed/engaged in illegal things, promiscuous, … Less than 20% of them actually finish their education and work honestly in this country. Which shows they can make it up here; it`s just that they don`t want it, they like it more down there, in their uneducated, tacky ways. No other ethnic community in Romania causes the problems they cause. All the others can live here normally and not feel offended when saying the traditional name of their ethnic origin out loud.

The girl in the video clip with the big hoop earrings did not marry until she was 23, had only met her husband to be, twice before the wedding. She is the only traveller I have heard of who divorced her husband for domestic violence toward her. apparently divorce is not acceptable to the travellers, and the young girls are never allowed to date boys, or to go out with a boy without a parent going with them as a chaperone. In fact according to the TV series no girl can approach a boy she fancies, but has to wait for him to approach her. Nor are they allowed to even taste alcohol before they are married. Pre marital sex is unheard of. The traveller boys on the other hand have all the freedoms they need!

I’m from sunny socal, and we would never get away with this here, but how much fun is this? The brides and birdes maid’s always look great, they are not taking themselves so seriously. Everyone shows up and parties like mad. Not being a traveler I would never be allowed in the group, but I wish I could be. Keep on doing your thing, look like a blast.

I have to be honest, I WISH I had an excuse to do this. As it is, my family is old fashioned enough that my sister an cousin would probably throttle me with the tulle if I tried to make them wear it ^_^

“Nobody should argue with custom and tradition.” If nobody argued with custom and tradition, women would still not be able to vote, or decide who, when, or if to marry; some people would still own slaves and other people would still be slaves… also, this entire site is about making fun of weddings, which are pretty much *always* in some way about custom and tradition.
