My great-grandparents, John and Claire, were married in the early 1940s and stayed together until his death three years ago. Since then, my mom and her cousin both wore Nana’s dress in their own weddings and it’s as beautiful today as it was then.

Four groomsmen and only three bridesmaids? In the 1940s that meant one of them went home with bupkis.

that is some gorgeous lace … is that actually her veil?
Yes, the lace is her veil. Sadly, I haven’t actually seen it myself. Mom and Kristi used different veils when they got married. I’m not sure it actually exists anymore. I hope it does somewhere.
Wow.. your great grandparents got married in the 1940s? O_O Young pup!
Gorgeous dress but I think I’d be too much of a klutz to walk in it safely.
What is that thing on the Groom’s leg? I just can’t work it out. I’d love to see the dress in colour.
Just a guess, but I think it’s white!
In the bridal world there is no such thing as ‘white’. Cream, ivory, champagne, snow, ghost white etc. Particularly being back-in-the-day, I’m going to assume it isn’t a bright white.
Touche. I meant “white” as opposed to “color”. Wouldn’t it be lovely in a champagne? Ooooo.
It’s not on his leg, it’s by his leg. I believe it’s the leg of the flower stand that is behind them.
It is a very 40′s thing to arrange the dress train around the feet of the bride like this. My mother’s pictures are the same pose.
They still do similar poses today, though usually it’s the bride facing the side instead of front like it is here. It’s usually just to show off the train and veil.
The elegance and style of that era will never be equalled. Sadly. What a classy looking wedding.
You are so right! Elegance and style seem to be missing from many of today’s weddings. Not to mention good taste for the pics.
Gee, my previous comment went into moderation. Wonder which word it was that was questionable? Classy? Elegance? Oh I know..must have been that naughty “style” word!
Nah, they just m0derate everything here.
I saw the bridesmaids dresses and thought, “1990s?” Then I saw the caption. I guess fashion does really cycle back around once in a while.
So true! I wore a bridesmaid’s dress with a similar cut in 1991. All the gentlemen at the wedding who were young men in the 1940s complimented us bridesmaids on our dresses.
What is funny or out of the ordinary about this picture? An extra bridesmaid or groomsman is quite common. I think some posters assume this site is looking for ANY wedding pictures you have laying around.
The extra Groomsman on the end is the father of the bride. The mother of the bride died when the bride was just 13.
I can’t see the dress well, but I love the veil.
check out the 3rd “lady” from the left (left to right), that is totally a dude! wow, even back then eh!?
